Description:
Identification and development of strategies for the retrieval, treatment and conditioning of abnormal beta gamma wastes in interim storage on the UKAEA Harwell site and the provision of technical support to waste management strategy development at Dounreay and Winfrith.

Scope of service supplied

• Established an ILW disposal working group and waste disposal database, providing Harwell with a detailed plan for disposal of problematic ILW, which was used to address regulator concerns about long term storage of ILW on the Harwell site.

• Identified and developed strategies for the retrieval, treatment and conditioning of abnormal ILW.

• Production of a business case to secured funding to finance ILW treatment and conditioning projects.

• Development of a functional specification and conceptual design for a waste handling facility to support long term waste management operations beyond 2010 at Harwell.
